Mozambique - What we do

Global Programs Office—Mozambique works with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) researchers and their in-country partners, either as project staff or in supporting administration of research and training projects.

Strategic Information

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Mozambique (MISAU) and the National Institute of Health (INS), including the National Health Observatory (ONS), we offer technical assistance on generating and using strategic information for HIV prevention and control in Mozambique by building sustainable strategic information platforms and capacities in areas including:

Epidemiologic Surveillance

Our staff is involved in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of regional and national surveys. Our activities include household surveys, population size estimation, probability-based epidemiological studies among key and priority populations and HIV case reporting systems enhancements.

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

Our work with MISAU helps strengthen the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems for the nationwide HIV program. Current activities include improving the quality of program data, revising M&E tools such as the HIV testing and counseling register, building M&E capacity of the Ministry of Health staff and analyzing programmatic data.

Health Informatics

Our team partners with public health experts and fosters capacity development through tailored interventions, protocols and tools for implementation, data analysis and dissemination of findings. Our local team of Health Information Systems (HIS) professionals have expertise in:

  • Software development
  • Server administration
  • Information systems design, development, testing and implementation
  • Database management
  • Popular open-source health information systems and data collection tools such as DHIS2, OpenMRS and ODK
  • Data analysis, visualization, reporting and business intelligence systems
  • App development for Android and iOS
  • Dashboard development
  • End-user testing and training

Mozambique National TB Prevalence Survey

Our staff has led the development of a data management solution and provided technical expertise in Mozambique for the first ever fully digital national tuberculosis prevalence survey in the world.

UCLA Mozambique Medical Education Partnership

In addition to UCSF projects, the Global Programs office assists UCLA, in partnership with the central government referral and teaching hospital and medical school, to support training and education within the Department of Pediatrics.

Surveillance

The Global Programs team assists MISAU with key populations mapping and size estimation activities to better understand HIV in key population sizes, distributions, and characteristics. We also assess the utility of prevention-of-mother-to-child-transmission (PMTCT) program data for HIV surveillance

We support the UCSF Malaria Elimination Initiative, which is helping Mozambique to expand its entomological surveillance and capacity by providing:

  • Short trainings and advanced degrees on medical entomology
  • The National Malaria Control Programme with a framework to gather and analyze entomological data towards better decision-making for their vector control strategy and planning
